Recently our own Worthy Parts Director Jaymi Worthington and her Olympians Basketball team picked up the Kalgoorlie Boulder Basketball Association Women`s Division 1 Championship.
Defeating formidable opponents CBC, 70 – 64, the win cements a 10th championship for Worthington since her Division 1 debut in 1998/99 season. The win is also the third in a row for Olympians since Coach Worthington became Division 1 Women`s coach. The team also claimed the 2021/22 season minor premiership but the final was not played due to COVID.
Coming back from being down at 3 quarter time, Olymps, finished with a strong final quarter piling on 23 points with the work of experienced campaigners Ash and Kate Sidebottom, Zaleema Bourne and Kaitlyn Harding. The team were also faced not having two of their more experienced members – Ashlee Monaghan and Jemma Gatti available on the night.
Coach Worthington praised the efforts of the team who stood up and managed to grind down their opponents without the usual depth telling the Kalgoorlie Miner “We were a bit undermanned so I was very, very proud because everyone stepped up,” she said.
“They each had that never-say-die attitude, but it was certainly a grind because we suddenly didn’t have that usual bench depth.”
Coach Worthington has now directed her attention to the NBL1 West season which has commenced – coaching the Goldfields Giants Women`s team. Coach Worthington is the only NBL1 West Women`s female head coach in the League.
